How California Registration Works
California registration fees decrease yearly until reaching the minimum fee after 10 years.
Vehicle registration cost includes VLF value-based fees plus plate fees.
Trucks have additional fees based on weight: Select "truck" as the vehicle type and enter the weight to view the fees. Cars and SUVs don't have weight fees.
The tag calculator finds how much vehicle registration and renewal costs by comparing the vehicle type to the purchase date.

Plate Transfers
California car plates stay on the vehicle when it's sold, and then transfer to the next owner.
If plates are current at the time of sale on a used vehicle, then the new owner pays a $15 transfer fee instead of full fees, and renews the plates when they expire.
Exception: Personalized plates are retained by the original owner and may transfer to another vehicle.

When estimating California registration fees, remember that the cost of registration is based on the purchase price instead of the MSRP.
Tag estimates are listed for reference only.
Final registration cost will vary depending on plate type, vehicle class, and renewal date.
