You can buy a car under $50,000 to calculate lower tax, but remember tangible products like car alarms will affect the sales tax rate in CT. If the car is $49,750 and the alarm is $300, then the sales tax rate would increase to 7.75% for the entire purchase. The car alarm would actually cost $879 with the additional sales tax.

Dealer document fees are added to the price for taxation so if the doc fee is $500, then the car must be $49,500 or less to qualify for the lower 6.35% tax rate.
